Keratin Frizz Treatment: First 72 Hours – Do’s & Don’ts
By Hair Inc | August 25, 2026
Quick answer: Wait 48–72 hours before you wash or wet your hair. Don’t tie it up, clip it, or sweat hard during that window. After that, stick with sulfate-free and sodium-chloride-free hair care.
When I do a keratin smoothing treatment at Hair Inc (it runs about 120 minutes), the biggest make-or-break rule is simple: keep your hair dry and untouched for 48–72 hours. That’s especially true in Bakersfield, where heat and sweat can sneak up on you fast. If you protect the first three days, your result tends to stay smoother, shinier, and easier to manage. I’ll walk you through the exact do’s and don’ts so you don’t accidentally dent, bend, or rinse out what we just worked for.
The first 24–48 hours: keep it dry, keep it down
Think of the first two days as your “set time.” I want your hair to stay straight, smooth, and undisturbed so the keratin can lock in the way it’s supposed to.
Do’s that protect your keratin frizz treatment
- Keep hair completely dry. That includes shower steam. If you’re showering, clip hair up loosely outside the 72-hour window, and keep it away from water.
- Wear it down. If it’s in your face, tuck it gently behind your ears. Don’t bend it sharply.
- Sleep with hair laid straight. A silk pillowcase helps a lot with friction and random kinks overnight.
- Plan for Bakersfield heat. If it’s a hot, dry day, keep a cool towel nearby for your neck and try to stay out of direct sun so you don’t start sweating at the scalp.
Don’ts that can leave dents and frizz
- Don’t wash or rinse, and don’t get caught in sprinklers or rain.
- Don’t tie it up. No ponytails, buns, claw clips, tight headbands, or hats that press lines into the hair.
- Don’t work up a sweat. Hard workouts, hot yoga, or long outdoor errands in Downtown Bakersfield can do more damage than people expect.
- Don’t add heavy product. Oils, thick creams, and waxy serums can weigh hair down and make the finish look flat.
If your hair accidentally gets wet: blot gently (no rubbing), smooth it straight with your hands, and dry it right away on a medium setting. Then let me know what happened so I can tell you the best next step.
Days 4–7: the “smooth week” rules (and the stuff to avoid)
Once you’re past the 72-hour mark, you can live your life again. But the first week still matters, because this is when people accidentally shorten the life of their treatment keratin result.
Sweat, sun, and Bakersfield dust
Bakersfield summers are no joke. Heat plus sweat at the scalp can make your hair puff back up faster, especially around the hairline. If you work a hot shift or you commute across town, I usually recommend booking your appointment on a cooler day or earlier in the day so the first 72 hours are easier.
And if you’re heading to an event near the Fox Theater or Mechanics Bank Arena in Downtown Bakersfield, plan your timing so you’re not rushing out into heat or crowded lines right after your service.
Hold off on tight styles for one full week
After 72 hours, a loose, low pony can be fine if you truly need it. But tight ponytails, hard clips, and snug headbands can still leave a bend. Give it a week before you go back to anything that pulls.
Pools, ocean, and chlorine: the 2-week rule I don’t bend on
If you want your hair smoothing and straightening treatment to last, stay out of pools, spas, and the ocean for at least two weeks. Chlorine and saltwater are rough on keratin treatments and they can speed up fading of that smooth finish.
Real-life tip: If swimming is part of your week in Rosedale, Oildale, or anywhere else around town, schedule your keratin smoothing treatment when you know you can take that two-week break. You’ll get more wear out of your service.
If you accidentally end up in water, rinse as soon as you can and follow with the right shampoo and conditioner. Then reach out so I can help you troubleshoot.
Keratin treatment for home: shampoo rules that keep the frizz down
After the first 72 hours, your at-home routine is what keeps your hair smoothing therapy result looking fresh.
- Use sulfate-free and sodium-chloride-free shampoo and conditioner. This is the big one. Sulfates and salts can strip and shorten the life of the treatment.
- Go easy on clarifying shampoo. Clarifying can be helpful sometimes, but it can also pull your treatment out faster. If you feel like you need it, ask me first and I’ll tell you what makes sense for your hair.
- Keep heat tools reasonable. You’ll usually need less heat after keratin. If you blow-dry, use a controlled airflow and don’t scorch the ends.
- Protect at night. A silk pillowcase and a gentle bedtime routine help prevent friction frizz and keep that smooth look longer.
If something feels off, tell me early (it’s usually an easy fix)
A little “settling” is normal. Your hair can feel extra sleek at first, then more natural after a couple washes. What I don’t want is you stressing at home, guessing, or trying random products that undo the result.
"My hair is consistently gorgeous, healthy and holds up during my visits."

Reach out if: you got caught in unexpected water or sweat during the first 72 hours, you’re seeing dents you can’t smooth out, or you’re unsure if a shampoo is safe. I’d rather answer a quick question than have you lose weeks of wear.
If you’re ready to plan your timing, I’m in Downtown Bakersfield and I see commuters and residents across East and South Bakersfield, Shafter, and Lamont. Keratin smoothing treatment pricing is $235–$465, depending on hair length and density. You can reach me at +16613334306 or hair.inc.2031661@gmail.com.
Quick location note for Downtown Bakersfield
I’m easy to find at 1829 18th St, Bakersfield, CA 93301. If you’re pairing your appointment with plans near Fox Theater or Mechanics Bank Arena, give yourself a little buffer so you’re not sweating or fighting wind right after your service.
